ROD ENJOYED THE MEAL, washing down the last bite of the peppery steak with a gulp of cold beer. The conversation had been even better than the food.
He collected their dishes and stacked them in the sink. “With your background, I didn’t have you pegged as the domestic type. You’re a good cook.”
“Living with my mom, we ate a lot of take-out and frozen food. Not the healthiest diet. So I figured it was time to start cooking.” She joined him at the sink. “You rinse. I’ll stick them in the dishwasher.”
They finished cleaning up, side-by-side, and then Rod invited her to the porch swing. They’d been on a roller coaster these past few days, and the knots in his neck were just starting to unwind.
Callie sank down next to him, gripping the heavy chain that suspended the swing from the beams above the porch. “Just for a few minutes. I should get back to the ranch.”
Rod pushed off, setting the swing in motion. “You’re staying here tonight.”
“What?” She thumped against the back of the swing, her feet flying in the air.
“Bobby’s in town. He broke into your place twice. We don’t know what he wants.” And I don’t want you out of my sight for one minute.
“I don’t want to disrupt your life any further, Rod.”
He tipped back his head and laughed. He’d gone down to New Mexico to look at some horses and wound up with a wife, who happened to live next door, and some shady loan shark on his tail. How could one overnight guest cause any more turmoil?
Callie giggled. “I guess it’s a little late to be worrying about that now, isn’t it?”
“You don’t even need to go home. I have extra tooth brushes and spare rooms with clean sheets. My housekeeper, Greta, keeps the house as if she expects a passel of McClintocks to descend at any second.”
“Will they?” Callie tucked her hands beneath her thighs and peered into the darkness at the edge of the driveway.
“Don’t worry. No chance of that.”
“I wasn’t worried. I think it might be kind of interesting to have a house full of people.”
“Interesting is a good word.”
